Book Look: Jonathan Edwards

Jonathan Edwards – Iain H. Murray

Each year I like to read some biographies.  This year my focus is Jonathan Edwards.  Murray gives a mostly readable look at Edward’s life.  He includes interaction with many of Edwards writings published during his life (which slows the pace a bit, but helps you better understand the man and his times).  Murray concludes by considering his legacy.  At 500 pages, it requires some dedication, but is worth the effort.

  1. That might last me a year. All depends on how ‘into it’ you can get. I need to break out my two volume set and give it another look. I remember reading some of it and Whitefield’s Journal one time. Pretty interesting stuff.

One of the things my mind has kept track of is how takan Whitefield was with the love and harmony exibited in the Edwards home. It was enough to make him desire marriage. It seems odd, in light of that, that where Edwards was fire and brimstone, Whitefield was evidently more gracious. Edwards wife wished that John was more like George in that respect.

Some things never change. Our wives still think that others do better at things than we. It’s enough to drive a guy crazy. 🙂

I’ve been reading Whitefield’s journal as well. A bit tedious at times, but has some gems here and there. I really like Whitefield.
