The fatal habit of considering Christian morals as distinct from Christian doctrines insensibly gained strength. Thus the peculiar doctrines of Christianity went
more and more out of sight, and as might naturally have been expected,
the moral system itself also began to wither and decay,
being robbed of that which should have supplied it with life and nutriment.

I discovered a book the other day: ‘Charters of Freedom’, which contain documents such as, Thomas Paine’s ‘Common Sense’, The Declaration of Independence, The Constitution, The Federalists Papers and others.
I like one of Paine’s opening lines; ‘A long habit of not thinking a thing WRONG, gives it a superficial appearance of being RIGHT’. He follows with this: finally ‘the sufferers have been aggravated into the inquiry’.
Though his comments were more toward the need to declare independence, it is equally fitting today as the freedom that independence gained has been, of late especially, called into question; enough so that I think more and more of us are being aggravated beyond our complacency.
Part of that loss of freedom is related to the morals that our government is forcing down our throats as being acceptable. We don’t want them to be so, but they keep pounding away at it. Somehow, we have got to do better about pounding back.
